Harlow Town Park event – Saturday 14th October 2006.

Organiser’s comments

When I arrived in the car park, shortly after 9am, I saw a large bus from Moscow. Could the power of the internet have drawn a crack Russian squad of orienteers to our humble event? Unfortunately, apart from one student sporting a “CCCP” top, there were no Russian competitors.

Nevertheless, we had competitors from far and wide within the UK. A thank you to students from Edinburgh and Liverpool Universities, and adults from Newcastle upon Tyne, Airedale (Yorkshire) and Wessex., as well as those from closer to home. Last but not least were the intrepid 10 students from the University of London who arrived by train and were last seen (after the event) enjoying a light refreshment at the nearby Greyhound pub.

Harlow Town Park is always a pleasure to organise. A car park just about big enough for the 49 competitors, toilets nearby and both start and finish within 50 metres of the car park. My reputation for organising good weather also continues!

Our next SWELL event is at Epping North (probably the best bit of Epping Forest) on Sunday 19th November. For further details visit: www.chig.org.uk.

Finally thanks to all club members who competed or helped to make it a special day.

Ray Curtis.

Planner’s comments

Although it lends itself ideally to Orange to Light Green courses, it is not easy to get a viable White or Blue course out of Harlow Town Park. Too many path junction choices for the one, too few choices for the other. SI would have been the ideal solution for the Blue (and Light Green) course, but I felt potential vandalism made it impractical. Sadly, the loss of 7 controls seems to justify that decision. Some people have the impression that HTP is flat, so I tried to use the contours to best effect. Even the shortest courses had some decent hills to climb.

The rain during the preceeding week meant that part of the longer courses was rather damp and muddy, but we're not letting that put us off are we? I gather that comments on the courses were favourable, so it seems not! I am sorry that a First Aid course necessitated my absence on the day, and I am truly grateful to Tim and Kenth for placing and gathering in the remaining controls, and for organising the excellent weather.
