ORGANISER'S
COMMENTS
Surprisingly, the the early morning
rain that turned the car park into a quagmire had not been forecast.
But this did not seem to deter the eagerness of competitors keen to get
back into the forest after the long break due to Foot & Mouth. Many
thanks indeed to all those who helped pull/push cars out of the mud before and
after the event.
We had two Start locations this time
and it was unfortunate that they had to be so far from the car park.
Great care was taken to find the shortest and safest routes to the Starts
and no incidents were reported from crossing the busy "A" road.
The great joy after reaching the Starts was to behold Epping Forest in
all its autumnal glory. I hope that
this added to your enjoyment of the event.
On the administrative side, we had a
large EOD for the Badge courses and were lucky to accommodate most competitors.
So please, please pre-book whenever you can as it makes our preparation
so much easier. Also, do not expect
Reception/Registration to be open half an hour before the published time.
I know that you may want the best choice of EOD Badge courses, but staff
still need the chance to set up and be ready for you.
Finally, a big thank you goes to all
those stalwart CHIG's who gave so freely of their time to help before and on the
day. All our plans are futile if you are not there to make it
work.

PLANNER'S
COMMENTS (SOUTH START, COURSES 1-11)
Epping NW is not a particularly large
area and the decision was taken not to use much of the western escarpment slope
because of fallen trees & undergrowth, thus the reason for the start &
finish position. Also the Epping Forest conservators imposed some restrictions
in the very northern section because of deer. For all these reasons it was a
struggle to get the distance for M21L without introducing complicated loop backs
over previous terrain. In the end all the courses were a little shorter than my
original targets.
I tried to avoid the nastier areas and
keep the running flowing through the nicer parts in the south and also, for
those who crossed the road, in the north section. This I think contributed to
the mins per km; some winning times were certainly faster than previous events
on this area. Most courses were within recommended times, although some were at
the bottom of the range. Overall I tried to get some technical complexity out of
the legs and avoid path runs, and judging by the favourable comments this was
achieved.
My thanks go to Ronan, and Julie, for
their ceaseless enthusiasm and their commitment to ensure that everything went
off ok on the day. Also thanks to all the Chig helpers, particularly Kenth, Tony
& Mark for help in putting out & collecting controls.

PLANNER'S
COMMENTS (NORTH START, COURSES 12-17)
We agreed early that a separate
Start/Finish was needed for the junior courses.
This was due to the busy A121 to cross (bet the adults noticed this!) and
the ill defined path system on the southern part of the map.
Anyway, the northern half of the map is regarded as one on the best bits
of Epping Forest - gently undulating and fast run.
It also meant that we could expand this part of the map to 1:10,000 for
the badge entrants. Thanks to John
Pearce and his OCAD skills.
The shortest course, 17, was easy to
plot following the path system. Courses
15 and 16 were more difficult so a taped route between controls 140, 114 &
113 was devised. I hope this did
not result in these courses being less enjoyable.
We also had to incorporate a short
courses 12 for the old 'uns. Although
the times were long, there were no retirals.
The colour coded courses utilised the
1:15,000 maps and were not pre-marked or bagged.
We were able to use the most northern
part of the map for the first time in six years.
It was more runable than previous. We
were also able to keep the herd of deer away from the competitors by moving them
to the eastern corner.
I also hope those long courses
competitors enjoyed this part of the map, although it was a bit disconcerting to
see a number running through the start/finish area.
Fortunately, there were not many people in these areas - a definite
advantage of electronic punching. I
was informed that this was not the optimum route - I'll leave you to decide.
No panics on the day.
The electronic punches worked and all controls remained in position and
all kit was recovered before the rain set in at the end of the day.
Finally, thanks to Ronan and Julie
Cleary for their guidance.
Ray Curtis
Judging by the comments of competitors
immediately after finishing (and since the event), you enjoyed the testing
courses set by the planners. A
number of the senior competitors particularly remarked on the pleasant lack of
optimal path-running routes on their courses.
The senior competitors also enjoyed the rare opportunity of running in
the pleasant northern section terrain.
It is clear from listening to your route descriptions and scanning the
split times that Epping continues to catch out even the most experienced
competitors – small lapses of concentration can cause significant time lost in
relocating. It is a pity that there was not a larger turnout to
appreciate the planners' considerable efforts.
Ray Weekes deserves special praise for coping calmly with replanning the
M21L course when (with 10 days to go and the courses at the printers) the
landowners ruled out the use of a key control site.
The remote parking, starts, finishes
and road-crossings were dictated by the logistics of running a Badge event on
this area and complying with the requests of the landowners who wished to avoid
large concentrations of competitors in the northern section of the area. This put the limited resources of CHIG under severe
pressure. However, the cracks
apparent to us on the day were not for the most part visible to the competitors
and the team coped. The SI
punching worked very well (giving the planners greater freedom without needing
to worry about manned controls or map exchanges), but a hardware failure caused
temporary difficulties with split times and, regrettably, prevented the
production and display of on-the-day results.
Thanks to the two Rays and Paul for
the positive approach they maintained at all times despite any setbacks sent to
test us. Thanks also to Tim
Pribul and John Pearce for all their work in the background (the latter
providing some essential assistance to me when Julie was taken ill in the
immediate run-up to the event). Finally,
thanks to Julie as assistant controller for her considerable input in advance of
the event (illness permitting) and, particularly, on the day of the event where
she left her sick-bed to put in a very full day controlling in the northern
section. It would have been
impossible for me to fulfil my role properly without her given the logistics of
the event.
